Where To Buy Kombucha In Costa Rica
We currently carry 12 products in our Kombucha category, including individual bottles, organic kombucha and a six-pack option.
The selection gives you options if you prefer traditional tea-based kombucha, organic ingredients, botanical flavors, tropical fruit or simple fermented fruit drinks.
What Is Kombucha?
Kombucha is a fermented drink traditionally made from tea, sugar and a culture of bacteria and yeast.
During fermentation, the culture consumes part of the sugar and changes the flavor of the tea. The result is usually tangy, lightly acidic and naturally effervescent.
The final taste depends heavily on what is added after or during fermentation.
A ginger kombucha can taste sharp and spicy.
Fruit makes the drink sweeter and more approachable.
Ingredients such as hibiscus, mint, lavender or tulsi create a more botanical flavor.
Because recipes vary so much, two bottles of kombucha can taste completely different even though both belong to the same category.
Organic Kombucha In Costa Rica
If organic ingredients are one of your priorities, start with Machuma.
We carry three 500ml Machuma kombuchas, and the ingredients used in all three are identified as coming from organic farming.
The three flavors are very different from one another.
Machuma Organic Tulsi & Ginger Kombucha
Our 500ml Machuma Tulsi & Ginger Kombucha combines green tea, tulsi, ginger, raw sugar and kombucha culture.
Tulsi is also known as holy basil.
The ginger gives the drink a familiar spicy edge, while tulsi gives it a more herbal character.
All of the listed agricultural ingredients come from organic farming.
This is the option to look at if you already enjoy ginger kombucha but want something more botanical than a simple fruit-and-ginger combination.
Machuma Organic Lavender & Lemon Kombucha
Our 500ml Machuma Lavender & Lemon Kombucha is made with green tea, lavender, lemon, raw sugar and kombucha culture.
Lavender gives it a floral direction, while lemon adds acidity and brightness.
The listed agricultural ingredients are from organic farming.
If you tend to prefer citrus and floral flavors over heavier fruit flavors, this is one of the more distinctive options in our selection.
Machuma Organic Hibiscus, Lemon & Mint Kombucha
Our 500ml Machuma Hibiscus, Lemon & Mint Kombucha combines green tea, hibiscus, mint, lemon, raw sugar and kombucha culture.
Hibiscus brings tartness and a floral-fruit character.
Mint makes the finish fresher.
Lemon adds another layer of acidity.
The ingredients are from organic farming.
This is a good option if you prefer a sharper, refreshing kombucha rather than a sweeter tropical flavor.
Kombucha House Flavors
Kombucha House gives us some of the most varied fruit and spice combinations in the category.
The current selection includes pineapple and ginger, turmeric with ginger and lime, strawberry and mint, dragon fruit, and raspberry with rose petals.
These are useful options if flavor matters more to you than choosing a traditional plain kombucha.
Pineapple & Ginger Kombucha
Our Kombucha House Pineapple & Ginger combines one of the most familiar tropical fruits in Costa Rica with ginger.
Pineapple brings sweetness and acidity.
Ginger adds spice and warmth.
It is an easy place to start if you are new to kombucha and already enjoy tropical drinks.
Turmeric, Ginger & Lime Kombucha
Our Kombucha House Turmeric, Ginger & Lime takes a more spice-forward direction.
Turmeric brings earthy flavor.
Ginger adds heat.
Lime cuts through both with acidity.
This is one of the least fruit-forward choices in the Kombucha House selection.
Strawberry & Mint Kombucha
Our Kombucha House Strawberry & Mint combines a familiar berry flavor with mint.
Strawberry makes it approachable, while mint keeps the drink fresher and less heavy.
This is a good option if ginger is not your favorite kombucha flavor.
Dragon Fruit Kombucha
Our Kombucha House Dragon Fruit uses pitahaya, or dragon fruit.
Pitahaya is a familiar tropical fruit in Costa Rica, making this one of the more locally relevant flavor options in the category.
Choose this one if you want a fruit-forward kombucha without the stronger spice profile of ginger or turmeric.
Raspberry & Rose Petals Kombucha
Our Kombucha House Raspberry & Rose Petals combines raspberry with rose petals.
Raspberry provides tart fruit flavor, while rose petals move the drink in a more floral direction.
It is one of the more unusual combinations in our selection and a good alternative to citrus or ginger-heavy kombuchas.
Bella Bucha Kombucha Multipack
If you drink kombucha regularly or want individual bottles ready in the refrigerator, our Bella Bucha Kombucha comes as six 355ml bottles.
It is a fruit-flavored fermented tea beverage made using a SCOBY culture.
The individual bottles make this very different from the larger single-bottle options in the rest of the category.
Instead of opening one larger bottle and pouring servings, you have six separate portions.
That can be useful for work, lunch, travel or households where several people drink kombucha.
Naturally Fermented Fruit Drinks
We also carry three Natural Brand drinks within our Kombucha category.
There is an important distinction here.
These products are described as naturally fermented fruit drinks rather than traditional tea-based kombucha.
Their ingredient lists are extremely simple.
Each contains fruit and fresh ginger and develops live cultures through natural fermentation.
If you specifically want kombucha made from tea and kombucha culture, choose Machuma, Bella Bucha or one of the Kombucha House products.
If you mainly want a naturally fermented fruit drink with live cultures, the Natural Brand range gives you another option.
Natural Brand Pineapple & Ginger
Our 500ml Pineapple & Ginger Naturally Fermented Drink is made with only pineapple and fresh ginger.
It contains no artificial flavors, colors or preservatives.
Natural fermentation gives it light carbonation and live cultures.
The simple two-ingredient recipe makes this one of the easiest products on the page to understand.
If pineapple and ginger are the flavors you want, there is very little else competing with them.
Natural Brand Passion Fruit & Ginger
Our 500ml Passion Fruit & Ginger Naturally Fermented Drink is made using ripe passion fruit and fresh ginger.
Again, there are only two main ingredients.
Natural fermentation produces the tang and light fizz.
Passion fruit, or maracuyá, has a sharper tropical acidity than pineapple, so this is a good option if you prefer a more tart drink.
Natural Brand Blackberry & Ginger
Our 500ml Blackberry & Ginger Naturally Fermented Drink combines blackberry and fresh ginger.
It contains live cultures from natural fermentation and no artificial flavors, colors or preservatives.
Blackberry gives this one a darker berry flavor compared with the tropical pineapple and passion fruit options.
Which Kombucha Should You Choose?
Start with flavor.
If you like ginger:
Choose Machuma Tulsi & Ginger, Kombucha House Pineapple & Ginger, Kombucha House Turmeric Ginger & Lime, or one of the Natural Brand ginger-fermented drinks.
If you like floral flavors:
Try Machuma Lavender & Lemon, Machuma Hibiscus Lemon & Mint, or Kombucha House Raspberry & Rose Petals.
If you prefer tropical fruit:
Look at pineapple, passion fruit or dragon fruit.
If you want organic kombucha:
Start with the three Machuma options.
If you want a multipack:
Bella Bucha gives you six individual 355ml bottles.
If you want the shortest ingredient list:
Natural Brand’s three fermented fruit drinks each center on fruit and fresh ginger.
Traditional Kombucha Vs Naturally Fermented Fruit Drinks
These categories overlap, but they should not be treated as identical.
Traditional kombucha starts with tea, sugar and a kombucha culture.
Machuma’s ingredient lists clearly include green tea, raw sugar and kombucha culture.
Bella Bucha is also a fermented tea beverage produced with a SCOBY culture.
The Natural Brand products are fruit-and-ginger drinks fermented naturally.
They contain live cultures, but their product information does not list tea or a kombucha SCOBY.
We keep both in the same broader fermented-drink category because shoppers looking for kombucha often want both styles, but the distinction matters.
What Is A SCOBY?
SCOBY is short for a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast.
It is used to ferment sweetened tea when making traditional kombucha.
During fermentation, microorganisms in the culture transform the drink and create the tart flavor and natural carbonation associated with kombucha.
Fermentation also means every kombucha is not going to taste like sweetened iced tea.
The acidity is part of the drink.
Does Kombucha Contain Sugar?
Traditional kombucha usually starts with sugar because the microorganisms involved in fermentation need a source of carbohydrates.
For example, all three Machuma kombuchas contain raw sugar as part of the recipe.
That does not mean every gram of sugar added before fermentation necessarily remains in the finished drink.
The exact residual sugar varies according to the product and fermentation process.
If sugar intake is important to you, check the nutrition panel on the specific bottle rather than assuming all kombucha has the same amount.
Does Kombucha Contain Probiotics?
Some kombucha and fermented drinks contain live microorganisms as a result of fermentation.
Our Bella Bucha multipack includes live probiotics, while the Machuma Hibiscus, Lemon & Mint kombucha is described as containing probiotics. The Natural Brand drinks contain live cultures created through fermentation.
That does not mean every kombucha contains the same microorganisms or amount.
It also does not mean kombucha should be treated as medicine.
If you are buying it mainly because you enjoy fermented foods and drinks, there are plenty of options.
If you are looking for a specific probiotic strain or dose, check the individual label.
Is Kombucha Good For Gut Health?
Kombucha is often marketed around digestion and gut health because it is fermented and may contain live cultures.
The evidence for broad health claims is much less clear than the marketing around kombucha can make it seem.
We do not treat kombucha as a treatment for digestive disease, weight loss or other medical conditions.
Buy it because you enjoy the taste, want a fermented drink, or want an alternative to conventional soft drinks.
Any specific health goal should be considered separately from the product’s flavor and fermentation.
What Does Kombucha Taste Like?
Kombucha is usually tart, slightly sweet and lightly fizzy.
The fermentation gives it an acidity that can surprise people the first time they drink it.
Flavor ingredients can change the experience significantly.
Pineapple and passion fruit make the drink more tropical.
Ginger adds heat.
Mint makes it fresher.
Lavender and rose petals give it floral notes.
Turmeric creates a more earthy flavor.
If you are completely new to kombucha, a fruit-forward flavor such as pineapple, strawberry or passion fruit may be an easier starting point.
Is Kombucha Carbonated?
Most kombucha has some carbonation.
It may be created naturally during fermentation rather than being identical to the carbonation in a conventional soda.
Our Natural Brand drinks specifically develop delicate or light natural bubbles during fermentation, while Bella Bucha has gentle effervescence.
Because fermentation can continue under certain conditions, follow the storage directions for the bottle and open carefully.
Kombucha Vs Soda
Kombucha and soda can both be cold, flavored and fizzy, but they are very different drinks.
Traditional soda is generally a carbonated sweetened beverage.
Kombucha is fermented.
Its acidity, aroma and flavor come partly from that fermentation process.
If you want something that tastes exactly like soda, kombucha may take some adjustment.
If you already enjoy kefir, fermented foods, sourdough or other fermented products, the tang will feel more familiar.
Kombucha Vs Kefir
Kombucha and kefir are both fermented drinks, but they are not the same.
Traditional kombucha is tea-based.
Kefir is commonly made from milk or water using a different culture.
The flavor, texture and microorganisms involved are different.
We also carry a separate selection of kefir in Costa Rica for customers interested in other fermented products.
When To Drink Kombucha
There is no single required time to drink kombucha.
Drink it chilled with lunch.
Have one in the afternoon.
Serve it with dinner.
Use it as an alternative when you want something more interesting than water but do not want a conventional soft drink.
A 355ml Bella Bucha bottle is easy for one serving.
A 500ml Machuma or Natural Brand bottle gives you a larger format.
Kombucha With Food
The acidity of kombucha can work well with food.
Try fruit-forward kombucha with:
Salads
Sandwiches
Light lunches
Cheese boards
Asian-inspired meals
Grilled foods
A ginger or turmeric kombucha can pair well with stronger savory dishes.
Floral options such as lavender or rose petals work better when you want something lighter and more aromatic.
How To Store Kombucha In Costa Rica
Follow the storage directions on the specific product.
Many kombuchas and live fermented drinks require refrigeration.
That matters even more in Costa Rica’s warm climate.
Do not leave a refrigerated bottle sitting in a hot vehicle or outside for long periods.
Keep it cold during storage and return it to the refrigerator after opening.
Natural carbonation can also build in fermented drinks, so handle bottles carefully and follow the package instructions.
