Where To Buy Coffee Beans In Costa Rica

Living in one of the world’s best-known coffee-producing countries gives you plenty of coffee choices.

The harder part can be finding the specific type of whole bean coffee you want.

Maybe you want organic coffee from Tarrazú.

Maybe you want a large bag of Britt beans.

Maybe you prefer medium roast over dark roast.

Maybe you need decaf but still want to grind the beans yourself.

Or perhaps you want to try something more distinctive, such as honey-process or peaberry coffee.

That is why we carry more than one whole bean coffee brand.

Instead of offering one generic bag, our selection lets you compare region, roast, production method, package size and certification.

Costa Rican Whole Bean Coffee

Costa Rica’s geography gives coffee producers a wide range of growing conditions.

Altitude, rainfall, soil, variety, processing method and roasting all affect what eventually reaches your cup.

ICAFE notes that more than 80% of Costa Rica’s coffee-growing area is located between approximately 800 and 1,600 meters above sea level. Volcanic-origin soils and the country’s mountain climates are important parts of Costa Rica’s coffee-growing environment.

Several of our whole bean coffees give you much more specific origin information.

Our AFAORCA beans come from Tarrazú.

Our Britt Gourmet beans blend coffee from Costa Rica’s Central and Western Valleys.

Honey Select comes from Naranjo.

That makes it possible to explore Costa Rican coffee by more than brand alone.

AFAORCA Organic Coffee Beans From Tarrazú

AFAORCA is one of the most interesting whole bean coffees we carry because there is a real farming organization behind it.

AFAORCA stands for Asociación de Familias Orgánicas de los Cerros Caraigres.

The association was formed by Costa Rican farming families interested in developing organic agriculture and has been working with organic producers since the 1990s.

Its producers are located in communities around Aserrí, Acosta, Desamparados and Los Santos, including areas associated with some of Costa Rica’s best-known coffee landscapes.

We carry AFAORCA organic whole bean coffee in two sizes.

500g AFAORCA Organic Coffee Beans

Our 500g AFAORCA Organic Coffee Beans come from the Tarrazú area.

The coffee is grown at approximately 1,300 to 1,700 meters above sea level.

Its tasting notes include:

Cocoa

Blueberry

Strawberry

Lemon

The ingredients are simple: 100% Costa Rican coffee.

This is a good place to start if you want locally produced organic whole bean coffee with clear information about region, altitude and tasting profile.

340g AFAORCA Organic Coffee Beans

Our 340g AFAORCA Organic Coffee Beans give you the same Tarrazú profile in a smaller package.

They are also grown at approximately 1,300 to 1,700 meters and feature cocoa, blueberry, strawberry and lemon notes. The coffee is 100% Costa Rican.

Choose the 340g size if you want to try the coffee before moving to the larger bag or if you rotate between several coffees at home.

Choose the 500g size if it is already one of your regular coffees.

Organic Coffee From Small Costa Rican Farms

AFAORCA works with certified organic farming families in the Cerros Caraigres region.

The organization describes its farms as using organic production methods without conventional synthetic agrochemicals such as chemical fertilizers, herbicides and fungicides.

Its coffee production also incorporates shade trees, fruit trees and other vegetation rather than treating a coffee farm as a bare monoculture.

The association operates its own ecological coffee mill, where water use is reduced, coffee can be dried using solar energy, and processing residues are returned to agricultural use.

For someone searching for organic coffee beans in Costa Rica, this makes AFAORCA much more than an organic label on a package.

It connects the coffee to a group of Costa Rican farming families, a growing region and a specific production model.

Honey Select Organic Coffee Beans

We also carry Honey Select Organic Coffee Beans from Taza Amarilla in 340g and 500g sizes.

Honey Select gives you another style of Costa Rican organic whole bean coffee.

The coffee comes from Naranjo at approximately 1,200 to 1,700 meters above sea level and uses the honey process.

Its flavor profile includes watermelon, caramel and vanilla.

The ingredients are 100% Costa Rican coffee.

Choose Honey Select if you want to move beyond choosing coffee only by medium or dark roast and start exploring how coffee processing affects the cup.

What Is Honey-Process Coffee?

Honey-process coffee does not contain honey.

The name refers to what happens after the coffee cherry is harvested.

When coffee is honey processed, part of the sticky fruit mucilage remains around the seed while it dries.

That is different from a fully washed process, where more of that fruit material is removed before drying.

Leaving some mucilage during drying can contribute sweetness, fruit character and body to the finished coffee.

The exact result still depends on the farm, coffee variety, drying conditions and roast.

Honey Select is useful if you want to compare a coffee chosen for its processing method rather than simply buying another standard roast.

Britt Gourmet Coffee Beans 908g

Our 908g Britt Gourmet Coffee Beans give you one of the largest Costa Rican whole bean options in our selection.

The blend combines beans from Costa Rica’s Central Valley and Western Valley.

The Central Valley component brings a sweeter and brighter character, while the Western Valley contributes more body.

The only ingredient is coffee.

The 908g, or 2 lb, bag is useful for:

Households with several coffee drinkers

Offices

Vacation rentals

People who make several cups each day

Anyone who would rather buy a larger bag than repeatedly replace 250g packages

If you already know you like Britt and go through coffee quickly, the larger format makes more sense than buying several smaller bags.

Britt Decaffeinated Whole Bean Coffee

Decaf drinkers do not have to give up whole beans.

Our 908g Britt Decaffeinated Coffee is whole bean roasted coffee made from 100% Arabica beans in Costa Rica.

The package contains 908g.

This is particularly useful if you want to grind your decaf immediately before brewing rather than buying pre-ground decaffeinated coffee.

It also gives households an option for evening coffee without switching away from freshly ground beans.

Decaf Coffee Beans Vs Regular Coffee Beans

The main difference is caffeine.

Both can still be sold as whole roasted coffee beans and ground immediately before brewing.

Decaffeination does not mean the coffee is automatically caffeine-free. Small amounts of caffeine can remain after decaffeination.

If you are avoiding caffeine for medical reasons, that distinction can matter.

For everyday coffee drinkers who simply want considerably less caffeine later in the day, whole bean decaf offers the same advantage of grinding just before brewing.

Café Río Nuevo Coffee Beans

We carry Café Río Nuevo from Pan y Amor in two roast levels.

Both come in 250g bags.

Café Río Nuevo Medium Roast Coffee Beans

Our 250g Café Río Nuevo Medium Roast Coffee Beans give you a straightforward smaller-bag medium roast.

This is a good option if you generally prefer a roast that leaves more room for the coffee’s original character.

The 250g size also works well if you switch between different coffees rather than using the same beans every day.

Café Río Nuevo Dark Roast Coffee Beans

Our 250g Café Río Nuevo Dark Roast Coffee Beans give you the darker alternative.

If you prefer more developed roast flavor, start here.

Having the same coffee available as medium and dark roast also makes Café Río Nuevo useful if you are still deciding which roast level you prefer.

Medium Roast Vs Dark Roast Coffee Beans

Roast level has a major effect on flavor.

Medium roast generally keeps more balance between the characteristics of the original coffee and the flavors created during roasting.

Dark roast moves more of the flavor toward the roasting process itself.

You may notice deeper toasted, roasted or bitter notes as roasting becomes darker.

Neither is automatically better.

Choose medium roast if you tend to enjoy more origin character and brightness.

Choose dark roast if you prefer stronger roasted flavors and a heavier cup.

If you are unsure, buying both Café Río Nuevo roasts or both Emana roasts gives you an easy comparison.

Emana Certified Organic Coffee Beans

Emana gives us another certified organic whole bean option.

We carry:

250g Certified Organic Medium Roast Coffee Beans

250g Certified Organic Dark Roast Coffee Beans

The simple difference is roast.

Choose medium if you want more balance and less roast dominance.

Choose dark if you prefer a deeper roasted profile.

Both are useful for shoppers specifically searching for certified organic coffee beans in Costa Rica.

If organic coffee is your main priority, you can also explore our Organic Coffee Costa Rica guide for more whole bean and ground options.

Emana Zero Carbon Coffee Beans

We also carry Emana Zero Carbon coffee beans in medium and dark roasts:

250g Zero Carbon Medium Roast Coffee Beans

250g Zero Carbon Dark Roast Coffee Beans

These come in the same practical 250g size as the certified organic Emana coffees.

Again, choose based primarily on roast preference unless you have a specific reason to select one product line over another.

Café Leo Seguetto Peaberry Whole Bean Coffee

Our 500g Café Leo Seguetto Peaberry Whole Bean Coffee gives you something different from a standard whole bean coffee.

A peaberry forms when a coffee cherry develops one rounded seed rather than the more typical pair of flat-sided seeds.

Because peaberries are physically different from standard beans, they are commonly separated during coffee sorting and roasted as their own lot.

They are not automatically “better” than ordinary coffee beans.

What makes them interesting is that they give you another specific coffee style to compare.

Our Café Leo Seguetto option comes in a 500g whole bean format.

Illy Italia Whole Coffee Beans

Most of this page focuses on Costa Rican coffee, but we also carry imported whole beans.

Our 1.5kg Illy Italia Coffee Beans provide a large-format Italian option.

The 1.5kg size is substantially larger than most of our local specialty coffee bags.

This is an option to consider if you specifically want Illy or regularly use whole beans for espresso-style coffee.

For customers whose priority is coffee actually grown in Costa Rica, AFAORCA, Britt and our other Costa Rican whole bean options are the better place to start.

Why Buy Whole Bean Coffee?

The main advantage is control.

Coffee begins losing aromatic compounds after grinding because much more of the coffee’s surface area becomes exposed to air.

Whole beans let you delay that step until you are ready to brew.

You also control grind size.

That matters because an espresso machine, French press and pour-over brewer do not generally use the same grind.

Buying whole bean coffee gives you one bag that can work with several brewing methods as long as you have an adjustable grinder.

Whole Bean Vs Ground Coffee

Choose whole bean if:

You own a coffee grinder

You want to grind immediately before brewing

You use more than one brewing method

You want control over grind size

Choose ground coffee if:

You do not own a grinder

You value speed and convenience

You use the same brewing method most of the time

Neither format fixes bad brewing.

Good whole beans ground incorrectly can produce disappointing coffee.

Ground coffee prepared correctly can still make an excellent cup.

The advantage of whole beans is flexibility and control.

Coffee Beans For French Press

French press generally works best with a coarser grind.

If the grind is too fine, more particles can pass through the filter and the coffee can become over-extracted or muddy.

Whole beans are useful here because you can adjust your grinder specifically for French press.

Medium roast AFAORCA, Café Río Nuevo or Emana beans can all be used this way.

The coffee itself does not have to be labeled “French press coffee.”

Grind size and brewing technique matter more.

Coffee Beans For Pour-Over

Pour-over is a good method when you want to pay closer attention to the flavor of the coffee.

This makes coffees with specific origin and tasting information particularly interesting.

Our AFAORCA Tarrazú beans have cocoa, blueberry, strawberry and lemon notes.

Honey Select has watermelon, caramel and vanilla notes.

Trying coffees like these with the same brewer can help you understand how different origins and processing methods affect what you taste.

Coffee Beans For Espresso

Espresso requires a finer and much more precisely controlled grind than French press.

Whole beans are almost essential if you want to dial in espresso properly at home.

You can use Costa Rican coffee for espresso.

There is no rule saying espresso must come from Italy or must use extremely dark beans.

Some people prefer dark roasts for a traditional espresso profile.

Others use medium-roasted specialty coffee to retain more origin character.

Our larger Illy bag is another option for customers who specifically prefer an Italian espresso-style brand.

Coffee Beans For Drip Coffee

Whole bean coffee works perfectly well in a standard drip coffee maker.

Grind the beans shortly before brewing, then use your machine as normal.

If your coffee tastes weak, sour, bitter or overly heavy, changing grind size can make as much difference as changing the coffee itself.

This is one reason a grinder is useful even if you use a simple automatic coffee maker.

Costa Rican Coffee Regions

Costa Rica has several recognized coffee-growing areas, and region can help explain why coffees from the same small country can taste different.

Our current whole bean selection lets you explore several.

Tarrazú

Our AFAORCA organic beans come from Tarrazú at approximately 1,300 to 1,700 meters.

Tarrazú is one of Costa Rica’s most recognized coffee-producing areas.

Central Valley

Britt’s Gourmet whole bean blend includes coffee from the Central Valley.

Coffee has deep historical roots in this part of Costa Rica.

Western Valley

The same Britt blend also includes Western Valley coffee, giving the bag a combination of two Costa Rican growing regions.

Naranjo

Honey Select comes from Naranjo and uses the honey process.

Instead of choosing coffee only by brand, these products give you an opportunity to compare actual growing areas.

Does Elevation Matter For Coffee?

Yes, but it is not the only thing that matters.

Temperature generally becomes cooler as elevation increases.

That can change how quickly coffee cherries mature and how flavor compounds develop.

Our AFAORCA coffee is grown at approximately 1,300 to 1,700 meters.

Honey Select ranges from approximately 1,200 to 1,700 meters.

Costa Rica has extensive coffee production in elevated mountain environments, one of the factors behind the country’s international coffee reputation.

Elevation should still be considered alongside variety, soil, processing, roasting and brewing.

A high number on a package does not automatically guarantee that you will prefer the coffee.

What Does 100% Costa Rican Coffee Mean?

For our AFAORCA whole beans, the ingredient is 100% Costa Rican coffee.

That means the coffee is not being presented as an international blend of beans from several countries.

If buying locally grown coffee matters to you, look at origin rather than assuming every coffee sold in Costa Rica was grown here.

We also sell imported coffee, including Illy.

The difference is clear so you can choose based on what matters to you.

Organic Coffee Beans Vs Regular Coffee Beans

Organic describes how the coffee is produced under an organic standard.

It does not describe roast level.

You can have organic medium roast coffee.

You can have organic dark roast coffee.

You can also have excellent coffee that is not certified organic.

Our selection includes certified organic Emana beans and organic AFAORCA coffee, as well as other whole bean coffees without an organic claim.

If certification is one of your buying requirements, select a product that clearly carries that designation rather than assuming “natural,” “local” and “organic” mean the same thing.

Which Coffee Beans Should You Choose?

If you want organic Costa Rican coffee with clear regional information, choose AFAORCA Organic Coffee Beans.

If you want to explore honey processing, choose Honey Select Organic Coffee Beans.

If you want a large bag of Costa Rican beans, choose Britt Gourmet Coffee Beans.

If you want decaf but still prefer whole beans, choose Britt Decaffeinated Whole Bean Coffee.

If you want a simple 250g medium or dark roast, choose Café Río Nuevo or one of the Emana options.

If organic certification is your main priority, choose Emana Certified Organic or AFAORCA.

If you want something more unusual, try Café Leo Seguetto Peaberry.

If you want a large imported Italian whole bean coffee, choose Illy Italia.

Small Bags Vs Large Bags Of Coffee Beans

Our whole bean sizes range from 250g to 1.5kg.

A 250g bag is useful when:

You are trying a new coffee

You rotate between several coffees

You do not drink coffee every day

You want to compare medium and dark roast

A 500g bag makes sense for more regular use.

A 908g or 1.5kg bag is better when you know you like the coffee and go through beans quickly.

Buying a larger bag only makes sense if you can keep it properly sealed and use it while the coffee is still fresh.

How To Store Coffee Beans In Costa Rica

Costa Rica’s heat and humidity make coffee storage important.

Keep coffee beans:

Tightly sealed

Away from direct sunlight

Away from the stove or another heat source

Protected from humidity

In a cool, dry cabinet

Do not leave the bag sitting open on the counter.

Avoid using a wet spoon or scoop.

If the original package seals well, keep using it. Otherwise, move the beans to a suitable airtight container.

Whole beans still age after roasting, so buying more coffee than you can reasonably use is not always an advantage.

Should Coffee Beans Be Stored In The Refrigerator?

For everyday use, repeatedly moving coffee in and out of a refrigerator can expose it to condensation and odors.

A cool, dry, airtight storage location is usually more practical.

If you decide to freeze coffee for longer-term storage, portioning it before freezing can reduce repeated exposure to moisture and temperature changes.

For a bag you are actively using every morning, keep storage simple and dry.

When Should You Grind Coffee Beans?

For maximum control, grind shortly before brewing.

You do not need to turn coffee preparation into a complicated ritual.

The main point is that grinding an entire bag weeks before using it removes one of the biggest reasons to buy whole beans in the first place.

Measure what you need, grind it, brew it and keep the remaining beans sealed.

Coffee Beans For Vacation Rentals And Airbnb Properties

Whole bean coffee can also be a nice addition to a vacation rental in Costa Rica, especially if you provide a grinder.

Costa Rican coffee is something many visitors actively want to try during their stay.

A larger bag of Britt can be practical for a busy rental.

Smaller local coffees such as AFAORCA or Café Río Nuevo can create a more specialty-focused coffee setup.

If you do not provide a grinder, ground coffee is usually the more practical choice for guests.

Coffee Beans For Offices

Larger whole bean packages work especially well with office coffee machines that have built-in grinders.

Britt’s 908g package and the 1.5kg Illy option require less frequent replacement than 250g specialty bags.

For smaller offices or teams that care more about rotating coffees, AFAORCA, Honey Select, Café Río Nuevo and Emana give you more variety.
