Where To Buy Organic Coffee In Costa Rica

Costa Rica is famous for coffee, but organic coffee represents a much more specific part of the country’s coffee industry.

We carry several choices for shoppers who specifically want organic coffee rather than simply coffee grown in Costa Rica.

You can choose between certified organic coffee from Emana, organic specialty coffees connected to AFAORCA and Taza Amarilla, or ready-to-drink cold brew made with specialty coffee from regenerative-certified Costa Rican farms.

You can also browse our broader Coffee Category if you want to compare organic coffee with the rest of our coffee range.

Certified Organic Coffee From Emana

Our Emana range gives you the simplest way to choose certified organic coffee based on two decisions:

Medium roast or dark roast.

Whole bean or ground.

That gives you four clear combinations.

Certified Organic Medium Roast Coffee Beans

Our 250g Certified Organic Medium Roast Coffee Beans are supplied by Emana Zero Waste.

The whole-bean format is best if you prefer to grind coffee immediately before brewing.

Grinding fresh gives you control over grind size, which matters if you switch between brewing methods such as French press, pour-over, drip coffee or espresso.

A medium roast also preserves a different balance of acidity, aroma and roast character than a darker roast.

Certified Organic Dark Roast Coffee Beans

Our 250g Certified Organic Dark Roast Coffee Beans give you the same whole-bean format with a darker roast.

Choose this option if you generally prefer a more pronounced roast profile.

Whole beans are also useful if more than one brewing method is used in your home. You can grind coarse for French press one morning and finer for another brewing method later.

Certified Organic Medium Roast Ground Coffee

If you do not own a grinder or simply want less preparation in the morning, choose our 250g Certified Organic Medium Roast Ground Coffee.

You get certified organic coffee without needing to grind the beans yourself.

This makes more sense for customers who use one brewing method regularly and value convenience over adjusting the grind for every cup.

Certified Organic Dark Roast Ground Coffee

Our 250g Certified Organic Dark Roast Ground Coffee combines the convenience of pre-ground coffee with a dark roast.

If you already know that you like a stronger roast character and do not want to grind beans each morning, this is the straightforward choice.

Whole Bean Vs Ground Organic Coffee

The difference is not about quality alone.

It is about how you make coffee.

Whole beans give you more control.

You decide the grind size immediately before brewing.

Ground coffee saves time.

Open the package, measure it and brew.

If you use a French press, espresso machine and pour-over at different times, whole bean coffee gives you the flexibility to change the grind.

If you use the same drip coffee maker every morning, ground coffee may be easier.

For that reason, we offer both formats rather than treating one as the correct choice for everyone.

Medium Roast Vs Dark Roast Organic Coffee

Roast level changes the cup.

Medium-roasted coffee generally allows more of the coffee’s original origin and processing character to remain noticeable.

Dark roasting brings stronger roasted flavors forward.

That does not mean dark roast is stronger in every sense or that medium roast is automatically more refined.

It comes down to taste.

Choose medium roast if you enjoy more balance between the bean’s original character and the roasting process.

Choose dark roast if you prefer deeper roasted flavors and a heavier coffee profile.

If you are not sure, trying the same certified organic coffee in both roast levels is one of the easiest ways to learn which style you prefer.

AFAORCA Organic Coffee From Costa Rica

AFAORCA is one of the most interesting organic coffee organizations represented in our selection.

AFAORCA stands for Asociación de Familias Orgánicas de los Cerros Caraigres.

The association began in 1996 when producer families came together to develop alternatives for organic agriculture. It has remained active since 1997 and works with families from communities in Aserrí, Acosta, Desamparados and the Los Santos area, including Santa María de Dota and San Marcos. (Afaorca)

This is not simply a brand buying generic coffee and putting the word organic on the package.

AFAORCA was built around families producing organically.

Its farms use organic agricultural techniques without synthetic agrochemicals such as chemical fertilizers, herbicides and fungicides, and its mission centers on processing and marketing certified organic agricultural products. (Afaorca)

That makes AFAORCA especially relevant for anyone searching specifically for locally produced organic coffee in Costa Rica.

Organic Coffee From Small Costa Rican Farms

AFAORCA works with small family farms.

Its organic coffee production is spread across communities near the Zona Protectora Caraigres, with coffee grown alongside fruit trees, forest species and other vegetation.

AFAORCA describes its coffee farms as using shade from diverse forest and fruit trees that provide habitat for resident and migratory birds. Vegetative ground cover is also used to help regenerate soil and reduce erosion. (Afaorca)

The association reports that its producing families generally manage relatively small farms, with coffee grown at elevations ranging from roughly 1,200 to 2,200 meters above sea level.

This type of farm structure is very different from an anonymous bulk coffee supply.

You know the organization behind the coffee, the general production area and the agricultural approach.

AFAORCA Ground Organic Coffee 500g

Our 500g AFAORCA Ground Organic Coffee from Taza Amarilla comes from the Asociación de Familias Orgánicas de los Cerros Caraigres.

The coffee comes from the Tarrazú area at approximately 1,300 to 1,700 meters above sea level.

Its tasting notes include:

Cocoa

Blueberry

Strawberry

Lemon

It is made with 100% Costa Rican coffee.

This gives you much more information than simply knowing a bag is organic.

You have an identifiable producer organization, region, elevation range and tasting profile.

If you want organic Costa Rican coffee with a stronger connection to the people and place behind it, AFAORCA is one of the products we would start with.

Why Tarrazú Matters

Tarrazú is one of Costa Rica’s best-known coffee-producing regions.

Costa Rican coffee is grown largely at elevation, and ICAFE notes that more than 80% of the country’s coffee area lies between approximately 800 and 1,600 meters above sea level. Costa Rica’s volcanic soils, rainfall and mountain conditions have played a major role in the country’s coffee reputation. (iCafe)

Our AFAORCA coffee comes from approximately 1,300 to 1,700 meters.

Elevation is only one factor in coffee quality, but it affects growing conditions and how slowly coffee cherries develop.

Region, variety, processing, roasting and preparation all contribute to what you eventually taste.

Honey Select Organic Coffee

Our 500g Honey Select Ground Organic Coffee from Taza Amarilla is another interesting Costa Rican organic coffee.

It is processed by AFAORCA and comes from Naranjo.

The coffee is grown at approximately 1,200 to 1,700 meters above sea level.

Its tasting notes include:

Watermelon

Caramel

Vanilla

The process is listed as honey.

The ingredients are simply 100% Costa Rican coffee.

What Does Honey Process Coffee Mean?

The name causes confusion.

Honey-process coffee does not mean that honey has been added to the beans.

It refers to how the coffee cherry is processed after harvesting.

With honey processing, some of the fruit’s sticky mucilage remains on the coffee bean during drying instead of being completely washed away immediately.

That remaining mucilage is the reason for the name.

Honey processing can produce coffees with noticeable sweetness, fruit character and body, but the result depends on the coffee, producer, drying conditions and roast.

So when you buy our Honey Select organic coffee, you are buying coffee processed using the honey method, not honey-flavored coffee.

Honey Select Vs AFAORCA Organic Coffee

Both products are 100% Costa Rican organic coffee options connected to AFAORCA, but they are not the same coffee.

The AFAORCA coffee comes from Tarrazú and offers cocoa, blueberry, strawberry and lemon tasting notes.

Honey Select comes from Naranjo, uses the honey process and offers watermelon, caramel and vanilla notes.

If you enjoy comparing coffee by origin and processing method, these two bags give you a useful side-by-side choice.

Choose AFAORCA if the Tarrazú origin and its fruit-and-cocoa profile appeal to you.

Choose Honey Select if you want to try a honey-process coffee from Naranjo with a sweeter tasting profile.

How AFAORCA Processes Organic Coffee

AFAORCA also operates its own organic coffee processing infrastructure.

Its ecological beneficio, or coffee mill, is designed to use relatively little water, and the beans are dried using solar energy. Coffee-processing waste is returned to agricultural use through solid and liquid fertilizers.

AFAORCA also operates a roastery dedicated to organic and specialty coffee. (Afaorca)

That gives the organization more control over what happens between the farm and the finished coffee.

For customers who care about traceability, this is a much more meaningful story than simply seeing “Costa Rican coffee” on a bag.

What Does Certified Organic Mean In Costa Rica?

Organic is a regulated agricultural term in Costa Rica.

The country’s organic agriculture regulations govern the production, processing and commercialization of agricultural products using the organic designation.

Costa Rica’s Servicio Fitosanitario del Estado maintains the registry and oversight system for organic agriculture. It states that farms, processors and establishments using the organic designation must be registered within the corresponding system. (SFE)

Organic certification is different from vague terms such as natural or eco-friendly.

That is why we identify products as certified organic only when that status applies.

Our Emana certified organic coffees are clearly sold as certified organic.

AFAORCA specializes in certified organic production and works with certified organic producer families. (Afaorca)

Organic Coffee Vs Regenerative Coffee

Organic and regenerative are related ideas, but they are not the same certification.

Organic agriculture focuses on a defined production system with restrictions and standards governing inputs and production.

Regenerative certification looks at another set of agricultural outcomes and management principles, including areas such as soil health, water and biodiversity.

That distinction matters because we also carry Coffee People cold brew made with coffee from Buena Vida.

Buena Vida works with regenerative-certified coffee farms across Costa Rica, and Regenified lists Buena Vida in Costa Rica as a certified operation for coffee.

We do not use “organic certified” and “regenerative certified” as interchangeable terms.

Coffee People Cold Brew Coffee

Our 210ml Coffee People Cold Brew Coffee gives you a ready-to-drink option.

It uses organic specialty coffee from Buena Vida and coffee sourced from regenerative-certified farms in Costa Rica.

Buena Vida works with farms across Costa Rica and states that its coffee supply chain is certified regenerative through Regenified.

The 210ml bottle works well when you want cold coffee without grinding, brewing and chilling coffee yourself.

Keep it cold and drink it straight or pour it over ice.

Coffee People Cold Brew Latte

If you prefer coffee with milk, we also carry 210ml Coffee People Cold Brew Latte.

It combines Buena Vida specialty coffee with milk for a ready-to-drink latte.

Like the black cold brew, the coffee comes from regenerative-certified farms in Costa Rica.

This is a different type of product from a bag of organic coffee.

Choose the cold brew when convenience matters.

Choose whole bean or ground coffee when you want to control the brewing process yourself.

Why Costa Rican Coffee Has Such A Strong Reputation

Costa Rica has built its coffee industry around Arabica coffee.

ICAFE states that Costa Rica’s coffee production is Arabica and highlights varieties such as Caturra and Catuaí. The country’s coffee-growing areas benefit from elevations, volcanic soils, rainfall and temperatures suited to producing high-quality coffee. (iCafe)

Coffee is also deeply regulated within Costa Rica.

ICAFE operates programs related to quality, traceability and identification of coffee grown and harvested in the country. Its “100% Café Cultivado y Cosechado en Costa Rica” program exists specifically to identify coffee that is entirely cultivated and harvested nationally.

Organic coffee takes that Costa Rican origin story and adds another layer around agricultural production.

Is All Costa Rican Coffee Organic?

No.

Costa Rica grows excellent coffee, but Costa Rican origin does not automatically mean organic.

“Costa Rican,” “specialty,” “organic” and “regenerative” describe different things.

Costa Rican tells you the country of origin.

Organic refers to a regulated production system.

Specialty generally relates to coffee quality.

Regenerative refers to agricultural management and outcomes under the applicable program or certification.

One coffee may fit several of these descriptions.

Another may fit only one.

If buying certified organic coffee is important to you, look for that specific distinction rather than assuming all Costa Rican coffee is organic.

Is Organic Coffee Pesticide-Free?

Organic does not mean that absolutely nothing is ever used on the farm.

Organic production follows rules about which agricultural inputs and methods are permitted.

Costa Rica’s organic regulations restrict conventional synthetic agricultural inputs and regulate how products using the organic designation are produced and certified.

AFAORCA specifically describes its farms as avoiding synthetic agrochemicals such as chemical fertilizers, herbicides and fungicides and using inputs derived from natural sources. (Afaorca)

The more accurate question is whether the coffee was produced according to an organic standard, not whether nothing was ever applied to the crop.

Ground Coffee Or Coffee Beans?

If freshness and control matter most, choose whole beans.

Grind only what you need before brewing.

If convenience matters more, choose ground coffee.

Our selection lets you do both.

Emana offers certified organic medium and dark roast coffee as either whole beans or ground coffee.

Taza Amarilla AFAORCA and Honey Select give you larger ground organic specialty coffee options.

If you own a good grinder and enjoy changing your brew method, beans make more sense.

If you want to make coffee quickly every morning, ground coffee is easier.

Organic Coffee For French Press

A French press works particularly well when you can control grind size.

That makes whole-bean Emana coffee useful if you have your own grinder.

Use a coarse grind rather than the fine grind used for espresso.

Medium roast will generally retain more of the coffee’s original flavor characteristics, while dark roast will give you more roast character.

Organic Coffee For Pour-Over

Pour-over brewing gives you a lot of control over extraction.

Whole-bean medium roast is a good place to start if you want to explore the flavors of the coffee itself.

AFAORCA and Honey Select are also interesting choices because they come with more specific origin and tasting information.

Honey Select’s Naranjo origin, honey processing and watermelon, caramel and vanilla notes make it particularly worth trying with a brewing method where flavor clarity matters.

Organic Coffee For Drip Coffee Makers

If you use a traditional automatic drip machine, ground coffee is the simplest choice.

Our Emana certified organic ground coffees give you medium and dark roast choices.

The larger AFAORCA and Honey Select ground coffees work well if you go through coffee quickly or make several cups each morning.

Organic Coffee For Cold Coffee

You have two options.

Make your own.

Brew organic coffee, chill it and serve over ice.

Or choose ready-made Coffee People Cold Brew.

The bottled cold brew is easier when you want a single cold coffee immediately.

The black version keeps the focus on coffee.

The Cold Brew Latte gives you the coffee and milk already combined.

How To Store Organic Coffee In Costa Rica

Costa Rica’s heat and humidity make proper coffee storage important.

Keep roasted coffee sealed and away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

A kitchen cabinet away from the stove is generally better than leaving the package open on a counter.

If you buy whole beans, grind what you need rather than grinding the entire bag in advance.

Avoid repeatedly exposing the coffee to humid air.

Cold brew and cold brew latte should be stored according to their refrigerated storage instructions.
